On his new album The Afrodub Experience, multi-instrumentalist and producer Umberto Echo embarks on a sonic journey through 50 years of Afro-Caribbean music — blending Afrobeat, reggae, and dub into a deeply textured soundscape.
Inspired by his work with members of Fela Kuti’s “Africa 70” in Berlin’s Afrobeat Academy, Umberto began merging the raw energy of 1970s Afrobeat with the spaciousness of dub. What started as a side project evolved over 18 years into his 12th studio album.
Featuring international talents such as Mark Wonder, Tydal Kamau, and Lenna Bahule, along with musicians from Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Jamaica, and Barbados, the album bridges continents and generations. Vintage tape machines, 1980s effects, and a 1960s mixing console meet cutting-edge production to create a timeless sound.
Across 10 tracks, The Afrodub Experience reshapes Afrobeat’s rhythmic layers with a dub producer’s hand — revealing new depth with every listen.
